Combine chocolate, 1/2 cup milk, whole egg and 2/3 cup sugar; cook over low heat until thick.
Cream shortening and remaining cup of sugar; add egg yolks and mix well.
Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with 1 cup milk and vanilla extract. Stir in chocolate custard mixture.
Bake in 2 waxed paper-lined 8-inch layer cake pans in moderate oven (350Β°) for 25 to 30 minutes.
Put layers together with frosting of your choice (regular white seven minute frosting, ivory frosting or chocolate fudge frosting).
