Butter each slice of bread on one side.
Place 8 slices, butter side down, in a buttered baking dish.
Spread ham, cheese and onion on bread.
Top with remaining 8 slices of bread, butter side up. Mix eggs and milk.
Pour over casserole.
Cover with foil.
Store in refrigerator overnight.
Before baking, sprinkle with paprika. Bake for 1 hour at 325°, uncovered.
