Mix boiling water and baking soda; allow to cool.
Mix the shortening, sugar and eggs together.
Add All-Bran, Bran Flakes, chopped dates, raisins or prunes and nuts (if desired).
Mix well and add buttermilk, soda water mixture, flour and salt.
Bake in well-greased muffin tins for 20 to 25 minutes at 375Β°.
