Add sugar, salt and about half the flour.

Add egg and shortening.

Gradually beat in remaining flour until smooth.

(Best to use kneading hooks with electric mixer, but small mixer can be used at beginning.)

Cover bowl with damp cloth and place in refrigerator.

About 2 hours before baking, cut off amount needed and return remaining dough to refrigerator.

Shape into rolls and place on greased baking sheet. Cover; let rise about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 400Β°.

Makes about 4 dozen medium rolls.
